We are learning from each other.....

Our learning community is hard at work. This week each reading group has been learning a Reader's Theater presentation which they will share with the rest of the class this afternoon. They are all fables and teach a lesson which we will review. Be sure to ask your child about their fable and part. We have practiced fluency, tracking and turn taking for reading the text, and using expression to play a role!!! We also have 7 ant groups hard at work looking up facts on their own group's ants. We are using a book's index, visual presentation in photographs and concept words, reading and retelling facts learned and thinking about the fiction and non-fiction comparisons of each ant. We will be teaching our classmates (and all of you at our show) what we have learned. We are also preparing for a real life compare and contrast of our life here in America to life in France. Eleanor's grandparents are coming in on Monday to share some information about their life with us. Ask your child the few French phrases we are learning to make them feel welcome!
Thanks to all who have taken the time to come in and share with  me during our parent conferences. I look forward to chatting with the rest of you this Tuesday! Don't forget that we will have an "in-class" Halloween party on Thursday and picture day on Friday. I will be out on Friday afternoon for a little over an hour for math training!
The Raffe report for next week:
Math: subtraction strategies/games
Reading: reading and learning how to retell information from a non-fiction book (animals)
Writing: we have been working on BOLD BEGINNINGS to reel in our reader, now we will begin to explore how master authors create EFFECTIVE ENDINGS
Science: finishing up the ant unit, creating materials for our ANTics show, end of unit assessment the following week and the start of our social studies unit on COMMUNITIES

As we head into the last week of October, be sure to stay warm, enjoy weekend time together and relax....
