Second graders love a good surprise...

This week has been very busy and lots of fun! We sure enjoyed our surprise birthday assembly for Mrs. B. and pajama day is one of my all time favorite special days...it was fun to do our work in our comfortable p.j.s...(and we could sleep in a little later since we were already dressed for school!)
We have been learning about Tall tales/ folktales and legends. See if your child can name some of the characters we've read about and explain to you what the difference is between the two genres. Next week we will finish up with  "legends". After that it is on to myths!
The students  are beginning to learn how to write informational texts. We are beginning our science unit on forces, simple machines, balance and weighing. They will conduct some simple experiments and are learning to write up  Lab reports.
Thanks for the donations of soap and of pasta/sauce/macaroni dinners. Learning to give back is a true gift we give our children!

Week of 12/9/13:
Reading workshop: Legends, groups will be practicing and performing reader's theater for folktales, continued practice of reading for information and retelling facts
Writing workshop: Lab reports and scientific process writing (question/hypothesis/procedure/results/conclusions)
Spelling/word work: rebel verbs (ex. tell/told, eat/ate), Unit 11: ea words
Science: starting simple machines
Math: finishing Unit5/test, start of unit 6: Mental math for addition

I will be out on Tuesday afternoon for staff training. The sub will be Mrs. Stanton. As we begin to see the very cold weather please be sure your child has a bag with their snow clothes for school (all labelled). They cannot play in the fields if they are not prepared and are not able to borrow the needed outerwear from the nurse. Thanks for your help with this...also be sure to listen for news when the weather is not going to be good to hear about school delays or closures! 'Tis the season....
