How can March be Almost over?

This month sure flew by, but the winter certainly hasn't! We are all looking forward to Spring actually arriving (and not just on the calendar!). Tomorrow we will visit with our author Steve Swinburn, we will begin our Fun Fridays math unit on Time. It is SPIRIT DAY so please send in our little Eagles (that would be  eaglets) in our school colors!

The PTO has placed our official Carnival basket and envelope in our classroom so feel free to start sending in those LEGO donations! I ordered three things from the Book club to add to the basket!

I have begun to work on word problems again with the class and have sent a HW sheet on them! These are certainly the most difficult part of the math curriculum for our students and we need to continue to work on helping them read and show their work to be successful on them!

The Raffe report for the week of 3/24:
Math: continued work on Subtraction unit, beginning of the Time unit (time to 5 minutes) I will give the 5 minute timed tests for this month. The daily Xtramath program in class has been going very smoothly and has already alleviated some of the anxiety over it.
Spelling: Unit 22: ur word pattern
Writer's Workshop: Putting together our All About Booklets - using all of our writer's workshop skills learned for informational texts
Reader's Workshop: Mystery Book Clubs - students are learning to have roles in the book group to facilitate discussion, build vocabulary and notice new information for our mystery genre. Ask your child the names of the different roles (very Super hero like). We are working on inferring skills (using your schema and skills to "read between the lines" of a story.
Science: finishing up the Balance and Weighing unit

Next Wednesday we will go to a sneak preview of the school musical "The Knight the Castle Rocked". The fifth graders always do such a fabulous job...it is great for the younger students to see what they can look forward to!

I will have lunch with the March blue ribbon winners on Tues. April 1!

Have a fabulous weekend.....enjoy March Madness!
