Well, we are very happy to see that SPRING did finally arrive...and just in time for our vacation next week! Over the break there will not be a homework packet, however I would encourage the students to continue to read and practice their Extramath (facts) for our April facts test the week we return! Almost half the class has mastered their addition facts - HOORAY!!!
Math: Place value and exploring numbers to the thousands. We will be comparing greater numbers, are working on writing them in standard, expanded and word forms, using our hundreds flats, tens rods and ones to create numbers. We are also working on reading, organizing and creating data (bar graphs, pictographs).
Reading: Finishing up our Mystery book club books so they can pick their own and do the next one without me! We will practice reading mini mystery passages and figuring out the clues. We are practicing answering questions in complete sentences! We are working on the skill of inferring information, deeper comprehension skills.
Writing: we are starting persuasive writing (opinions backed by solid reasons/evidence). We will be writing letters to introduce this type of writing, (favorite t.v. character, the tooth fairy, book recommendations).
Science: Soils we are learning about different kinds of soil, what makes up soil, and the job of the earthworm in creating rich soil. We will introduce composting as well. We will tie this unit to the Earth day activities we will do and to taking care of our planet.
I hope everyone has a wonderful, sunshine filled week of fun with their families. It is hard to believe that we are quickly moving toward the end of your child's second grade year....they have grown tremendously in all ways!!!!
