Happy New Year....

I know that it will take us all a few days to readjust to the school schedule....it has been a great holiday break! I hope my little friends will remind me if I still write 2013 on anything...that too takes some time to kick in! This year will prove to be a very memorable one for the Raffes - my oldest daughter graduates college in May and her sister graduates high school in June! Plus I celebrate my 25th wedding anniversary...lots of fun times ahead!
I hope that 2014 is a good year for everyone....you won't believe how many new skills your child will gain in the next 6 months. For the next two weeks I will be assessing how far they have come just since Sept. in order to have accurate information for the report cards. By the end of the week I will be sending out an electronic sign-up for the parent conferences to be held on Feb. 4 and 11. Next week, your child will be reassessed on their reading fluency.  This Friday is the kick-off assembly for our ONE BOOK ONE SCHOOL reading program. Be sure to ask all about it at dinner that night! We will do in-class activities based on the reading schedule you will receive (it counts for reading HW too)!

The Raffe report for week of 1-6-14:
Math: review and continued work on addition strategies, new games to reinforce mental math
REMINDER: starting with this week's HW packet your child should be doing Xtra math and marking it down daily. It really is only a 10 min or so program but the results are terrific when done consistently. I receive weekly reports from the program so I can track student progress. Once addition is completed your child can move to subtraction and then on to multiplication.
Word work/Spelling: Adding s, es, 's to words, Unit 13: er words (bossy r)
Reader's workshop: Myths
Writer's workshop: Writing informational texts(organization, visuals, definitions etc.)
Science: Simple Machines

Stay warm: extra hugs, snuggle and read together, hot cocoa by a fireplace. Also be sure your child is dressed for the weather (label clothing). There are no clothes/boots etc. to borrow at the nurse's office. Thanks as always for your help and support!!
